Nano One, Umicore sign tech development agreement

Published:

December 22, 2022: Nano One has signed a joint development agreement with Umicore on production process technologies for active cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, the companies announced last December 21.

Umicore will test Nano One’s M2CAM One-Pot process technology with the aim of integrating it with Umicore’s technology for the production of high nickel NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt) cathode active materials.

The partners said the deal, in addition to any future licensing opportunities, is non-exclusive.

Nano One CTO Stephen Campbell said the partners “share a common goal of improving the environmental footprint, cost, and performance of lithium-ion batteries, through materials and process innovation.” oh”.

On June 9, mining group Rio Tinto said it invested $10 million in a battery metals partnership with Nano One, to advance the company’s multi-cathode commercialization plans and support manufacturing of cathode active materials in Canada.

Umicore announced the inauguration of its cathode materials production plant in Poland on September 21.

The Nysa plant will provide cathode materials for lithium battery cell manufacturers. Umicore said the facility’s annual production capacity is set to reach 20GWh by the end of 2023 and 40GWh by 2024, with the potential to rise to more than 200GWh in the second half of the decade.
